What to Do After an Inpatient Hospital Stay?

Psychiatric hospitals provide the most intensive level of treatment for teens in crisis. They are designed to deal with mental health or behavioral changes that occur suddenly and require intense structure and intervention to protect the teen’s safety. A hospital setting is intended to provide a thorough assessment, short-term stabilization, and discharge planning to transition the teen into a less restrictive environment. Often the next logical step is residential treatment. Sill, many teens can benefit from a partial hospitalization mental health treatment program that provides intensive treatment during the day but allows the teen to remain at home on nights and weekends.

If your teen has received a recommendation to attend a partial hospitalization program (PHP) following an inpatient hospital stay, Beyond Healthcare in Toledo can help. We specialize in outpatient mental healthcare for adolescents and teens and providing support for their families. Call us at 833.698.0453 to learn more about partial hospitalization mental health treatment.

What is Partial Hospitalization Mental Health Treatment?

Mental health treatment programs operate on a continuum of care, with psychiatric hospitalization being the most intense and immersive and outpatient care being the least intense and immersive. Residential treatment, partial hospitalization programs (PHP), and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) fall between. The term “partial hospitalization” can be confusing because it indicates a connection to a hospital. PHP takes place in a safe, nurturing treatment center and can be considered a therapeutic day program.

At Beyond Healthcare, our PHP for teens runs five days per week, from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. We accommodate parents’ busy schedules by offering weekend and evening appointments that can take place in our treatment center, online, in your home, or your community. If your adolescent is stepping down from an inpatient hospital stay, we will work closely with their discharge team and you to coordinate PHP treatment. Your adolescent’s treatment plan may include:

  • Behavior modification programs
  • Cross-modal therapy
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Motivational enhancement therapy
  • Trauma therapy
  • Experiential therapy (Art, Music, Gaming, Play, Movement)

Guided group and family therapy sessions are integral components of partial hospitalization mental health treatment. We also provide tutoring and education programs so that your adolescent does not fall behind in school and medication management where needed.

The Benefits of Partial Hospitalization Mental Health Treatment

Partial hospitalization mental health treatment is a highly effective treatment option for adolescents stepping down from a higher level of care who need extra support as they transition into regular daily life. It is also beneficial for those not getting the support they need from an IOP or outpatient program. Because group therapy is so integral to PHP, adolescents need to function within a group setting for PHP to be successful.

Through partial hospitalization mental health treatment, adolescents receive education about mental health to understand and learn to manage their mental health to reduce symptoms and increase coping skills. The result is a reduction in risky behavior, emergency room visits, and repeat inpatient hospital stays. Other significant benefits include:

  • Access to medical and clinical support
  • Improved decision-making skills
  • Increased problem-solving skills
  • Improved communication skills
  • Age-appropriate peer support
  • Safety and security of a structured environment
  • Individual, group, and family therapy

At Beyond Healthcare, we understand that your adolescent’s mental health symptoms do not occur in a vacuum. The effects are felt throughout the family and environment. As such, we provide professional care coordination and case management services for your whole family. Further, through our community connections program, we help connect your family members with others in your community experiencing similar circumstances.
