Benefits of a Partial Hospitalization Program for Mental Health

When your adolescent needs professional help for a mental health concern, it can feel overwhelming to decide which treatment option to choose. Mental health services exist on a broad spectrum, with multiple levels of care designed to meet a wide array of needs. One option that works well for many is a partial hospitalization program (PHP). A PHP program provides the intensive, structured treatment of an inpatient program but allows your adolescent to return home on nights and weekends, giving them the best of both worlds. PHP also includes an educational component, with instruction from licensed teachers so that your adolescent doesn’t fall behind with their schoolwork. Contact us at 833.698.0453 to determine if the partial hospitalization program at Beyond Healthcare is a good fit for your adolescent’s needs.

What Are the Benefits of a PHP for Adolescents’ Mental Health?

A PHP is an evidence-based treatment option for adolescents and teens who do not require residential treatment but need more support than what is offered in an intensive outpatient program (IOP) or outpatient program (OP). In other instances, your adolescent may have recently left a hospital inpatient or emergency room setting and needs additional support right away prior to returning to school. When this is the case, you and your adolescent’s treatment team may determine that a PHP is the next logical step. A significant benefit of a PHP is that your adolescent will receive education about their mental health condition, giving them insight into how their condition impacts themselves and others and how they interact with their environment, including home and school. Other benefits include:

  • Improved coping skills
  • Increased problem-solving skills
  • Access to medical and clinical supports
  • Improved communication skills
  • Age-appropriate peer support
  • Safety and security of a structured environment
  • Individual, group, and family therapy

At Beyond Healthcare, we know that a real fear for adolescents participating in mental health treatment programs, and their parents, is falling behind at school. As such, our PHP includes tutoring and education, another benefit of our program. Participation in a PHP can provide your adolescent and family with the tools needed to minimize risky behaviors that can lead to instances of emergency room visits, hospitalizations, or interactions with the law.

What to Expect from Beyond Healthcare’s PHP

The PHP program at Beyond Healthcare is ideal for 12-17 year-olds whose needs fall on the spectrum between inpatient treatment and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) programs. It includes those adolescents who have completed inpatient care and are struggling with a full transition back into school and home life. Our PHP program runs from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm and includes meals. Before enrollment in our PHP, your adolescent will receive a comprehensive mental health assessment, which includes a physical exam, and medication assessment, so that our treatment team can have a complete picture of your adolescent’s needs so they can create an individualized treatment plan. Your child’s schedule may include any of the following:

  • Medication management
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Behavior modification programs
  • Trauma treatment
  • Dialectical behavior therapy
  • Strength-based approaches

The importance of making genuine connections with peers who can empathize with your adolescent’s struggles is a vital component to successful treatment, which is why guided group therapy sessions are an integral part of our PHP program. To the same degree, the role of the family plays a critical role in healing, so our mental health services are geared toward family involvement.
