Finding the Right PHP Program to Help with a Mental Health Crisis

When your adolescent or teen is experiencing a mental health crisis, it is essential to understand the different levels of treatment available to ensure they are getting the care most suited to their needs. A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a treatment option for adolescents and teens who do not require residential treatment but need more support than an intensive outpatient program (IOP).

At Beyond Healthcare, our PHP, also referred to as a day treatment program, is the highest level of care. Here, your adolescent gets the best of both worlds—a safe, caring, supportive therapeutic community during the day and the emotional support they need from family and friends while at home on nights and weekends. In addition to the same level of care found in most residential programs, our PHP provides educational support from licensed teachers so that your adolescent does not fall behind in school. Identifying a Mental Health Crisis

A mental health crisis involves your adolescent being at imminent risk of hurting themselves or others. You may feel like their behavior is out of control, they are past the point of being able to help themselves, and you and other adults in the situation are also unable to help them calm down.

Signs that your adolescent is experiencing a mental health crisis can include:

  • Rapid mood swings
  • Severe agitation with pacing and being unable to stay still
  • Rapid or non-stop talking
  • Making threats of harm to themselves or others
  • Extreme energy or total lethargy
  • Isolating themselves from friends or refusing to leave their bedroom
  • Confused or irrational thinking
  • Not eating or constant eating
  • Thinking everyone is out to get them or hates them
  • Sleeping all the time or not at all

Many adolescents experiencing a mental health crisis can also appear calm but make vague statements about how no one cares about them or that no one would miss them if they weren’t around. Others can express suicidal thoughts such as “I want to die,” or “I wish I never existed.”

What to Look for in a PHP Program

Not all partial hospitalization programs are the same. The first step is to make sure you deal with a PHP explicitly designed for youth. The mental health needs of adolescents and teens are vastly different from adults. Beyond Healthcare provides PHP services and programs that address the unique needs of 11- to 17-year-old adolescents.

The best mental health treatment centers will be proud of their facility and programs. They will want to share information about their programs willingly, so avoid those who do not freely and openly answer all of your questions. A reputable PHP for teens will have:

  • Accreditation, licensing, and certifications
  • Dedicated and credentialed staff who specialize in working with children and families
  • A multidisciplinary treatment team
  • Evidence-based and holistic treatment modalities
  • Expert leadership
  • A thorough aftercare and community support program
  • Exercise and nutrition programs

A suitable PHP will also offer comprehensive treatment services designed to meet the needs of different aged adolescents with various diagnoses. For example, a 13-year-old experiencing a mental health crisis rooted in social anxiety should not be in group therapy with a 16-year-old whose mental health crisis is rooted in bipolar disorder. At Beyond Healthcare, we take the time to complete a thorough assessment of your adolescent’s needs and create an individualized treatment plan to address their unique needs.
