How an IOP Can Promote Balance in Your Adolescent’s Life

If you are concerned that your efforts to help your adolescent manage a behavioral health concern are not as effective as they need to be, an outpatient program can help. Childhood mental health disorders affect millions of adolescents and their families from all walks of life. Mental health disorders are chronic health conditions that can have serious repercussions in all areas of life. Contact Beyond Healthcare today by calling 833.698.0453 to learn about our day treatment, partial hospitalization, and outpatient services for adolescents and teens.

Is an IOP for Mental Health Right for Your Adolescent?

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a treatment option that provides highly structured mental health therapy three hours per day, multiple days per week. At Beyond Healthcare, our IOP for adolescents ages 11 – 17 provides comprehensive mental health treatment with flexible scheduling so that regular routines are not interrupted.

There are a variety of situations in which an IOP can be a good treatment option. When your adolescent’s mental health symptoms have reached the point of impairing their daily functioning or making life feel unmanageable, an IOP can provide the support your adolescent and family needs. An IOP for mental health can benefit adolescents who exhibit one or more of the following:

  • Significant changes in sleeping or eating patterns
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Persistent feelings of anxiety, depression, hopelessness, or irritability
  • Struggling in school, refusing to go to school, or significant drop in school performance
  • Loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed
  • Self-harm or suicidal or homicidal thinking
  • Antisocial behavior or isolation

An IOP is also beneficial for adolescents who are being discharged from an inpatient or partial hospitalization program (PHP) and are not ready to reintegrate fully into daily life or are in outpatient therapy but need more support.

What Are the Goals of an IOP for Adolescents?

Even when adolescents share common diagnoses, their symptoms will be unique to them. At Beyond Healthcare, we believe that your adolescent is more than their diagnosis. We do a thorough intake assessment to develop an individualized treatment plan customized to your adolescent’s needs. While each adolescent’s treatment plan looks different, there are some common goals of an IOP, including:

  • Improving problem-solving skills
  • Learning to recognize unhealthy thinking and behaviors
  • Teaching coping skills
  • Developing increased self-awareness
  • Increasing communication skills
  • Reducing acute symptoms
  • Providing education about mental health

When adolescent suffer from mental health disorders, it impacts the whole family. At Beyond Healthcare, we believe that the entire family needs to heal for an adolescent to recover fully. Therefore, family therapy and other services are a fundamental part of our program and ensure that you will be directly involved in your adolescent’s treatment and progress.
