Parenting a Child with a Mental Health Diagnosis

As parents, we want the best for our children who may be experiencing debilitating anxiety, depression, or other mood disorders.  Finding the right level of care can be overwhelming and Beyond Healthcare is here to help by providing both a thorough mental healthcare assessment to determine the best course of treatment for your child and evidenced-based group therapy programs designed to empower your child with tools to manage their condition.

Our programs benefit from peer-to-peer interactions which is incredibly beneficial for kids and teens who thrive from knowing they are not alone in how they feel.  We are experts in providing pediatric mental healthcare, therapy, and delivering outstanding outcomes to our young patients.

However, therapy is not enough.  Parents, guardians and family are critical to achieving lasting mental healthcare outcomes.  They are the most important stewards of their children’s values plus their emotional, physical and intellectual development.

Some critical responsibilities of parents and guardians include:

  • Emotional Support:  Offering emotional support, love, and encouragement to help build a child’s self-esteem and confidence.
  • Setting Boundaries and Disciplining:  Establishing and enforcing appropriate boundaries to teach children about acceptable behavior.
  • Educational Guidance:  Supporting and facilitating a child’s education by being involved in their academic progress, helping with homework, and encouraging a love for learning.
  • Instilling Values and Morals:  Teaching moral and ethical values to guide the child in making responsible decisions.
  • Promoting Independence:  Encouraging independence and autonomy as the child grows, allowing them to develop skills and decision-making abilities.
  • Cultural and Social Development:  Introducing children to cultural, social, and community values, fostering a sense of belonging and understanding.
  • Health and Safety:  Ensuring the child’s health and safety by providing a secure environment and promoting healthy habits.
  • Being a Role Model:  Demonstrating positive behavior and values through personal actions, serving as a role model for the child.
  • Effective Communication: Modeling for children empathetic and direct communication skills.
  • Quality Time:  Spending quality time with the child, engaging in activities that foster bonding and a strong parent-child relationship.
  • Advocacy:  Advocating for the child’s rights and needs within the family, community, and educational settings.

Parenting is not something that adults know how to do well automatically, as it requires knowledge and skill.  Additionally, parenting a child with a mental health condition may pose challenges for any parent as they learn how to best care for their child’s condition yet still embrace and love them without condition.  Beyond Healthcare’s clinical program includes support for the family system through:

  • Weekly communication regarding progress in programming
  • Collaboration and coordination of care that considers the parent/guardian’s input and preferences when creating the treatment plan
  • Education regarding parenting skills best suited to the unique needs of their child
  • Information related to what a child may be struggling with and how to best handle it within the home environment
  • Strategy sessions and consultation where parents can talk to a licensed therapist about their child’s struggles and how to best create a strong attachment with their child

Communication with the family is only the first step, as we seek to be true partners with parents in their child’s care.
