Recognizing World Suicide Prevention Day

The staggering scale of deaths from suicide worldwide should be enough to give anyone pause. The medical community has been aware of this threat and its effect on mental health for decades. Yet, it is still hard to find countries that devote enough resources and attention to good prevention strategies. Teenagers and young adults are the primary victims of death by suicide, more than wars, terrorism, and crime combined. Adolescents go through a complex biological and social transition in their early teens that can trigger intense depression and suicidal thoughts, even if they don’t have a mental health diagnosis. But the worst outcome can be stopped by loving attention and well-informed care.

Why Beyond Healthcare Supports World Suicide Prevention Day

Our outpatient mental health center is focused on adolescents and teens from 11 to 17, which means we are experts at the challenges they face in the world, even without the specter of suicide. We want our young learners to have all the support and survival strategies that research can provide. We offer the following treatment programs:

  • Therapy for adolescents
  • Adult and family therapy
  • Day treatment and after-school programs

But to truly prevent terrible outcomes like suicide takes the work of an entire community as well as families and professionals. People just don’t know enough about the signs and behaviors that lead to suicide and how to intervene, which makes effective prevention difficult. Part of this is caused by a lingering taboo about discussing or admitting mental health problems.

World Suicide Prevention Day was created to build networks of information and advocate for countries to create national policies for mental health awareness and education. Beyond Healthcare wholeheartedly agrees with this mission to protect the most vulnerable among us, and on September 10th, we will recognize this great program which:

  • Began in 2003 as an initiative created by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and has grown to include over 40 countries
  • Acts in response to the social stigma and criminalization of suicide that prevents public understanding and even reliable statistics to study
  • Advocates for awareness and reduction of common suicide risk factors such as unemployment, poverty, and access to firearms
  • Works with regional and community organizations to ensure that accurate information is used to educate people about mental health awareness and therapy
  • Fight to get sustained funding for outreach and prevention programs, especially for adolescents

Each year World Suicide Prevention Day has a theme that addresses an aspect of suicide prevention, such as combating stigma or better prevention in different cultures. For the last three years, the theme has been “Working Together to Prevent Suicide” which aligns with Beyond Healthcare’s holistic and community-based approach to therapy for adolescents and teens.

Educate Yourself About Mental Health Therapy

As a parent of a adolescent or teen who may be struggling with a mental health challenge, the best thing you can do is reach out and get help from professionals who can explain how a good treatment plan works. Beyond Healthcare’s team of doctors and therapists are dedicated to a holistic perspective that includes the mind, body, and spirit of our learners. We create specialized plans for each adolescent or teen that considers all aspects of their life and family, so no one feels alone or unheard.

Beyond Healthcare makes use of evidence-based treatment strategies that have excellent results with a wide variety of emotional issues and mental health conditions like:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Developmental disorders
  • Self-injuring behavior

Once we have made a diagnosis of your adolescent, we use a variety of therapeutic techniques to schedule a flexible outpatient plan that works for your family. This holistic care can include family therapy as well as multimodal therapies such as:

  • Meditation
  • Mindfulness
  • Play therapy
  • Music therapy
  • Yoga
  • Art therapy

Community Connections is a Cornerstone of Our Holistic Approach

Building healthy social connections is a major part of the World Suicide Prevention Day agenda. Beyond Healthcare knows that support networks are critical for suicide prevention and overall mental health in teens. That’s why we started our Community Connections program to support our learners and their families. This group is:

  • Non-judgemental and inclusive
  • Meets regularly at our center
  • Brings together families of adolescents and teens receiving our treatment
  • An environment that will arm you and your adolescent with real-life strategies to combat depression and unwanted behaviors
  • Includes both program alumni and professionals in the field

Individual therapy is not enough, and we want you and your family to have the best possible access to support and care. This unique program is just one of our many tools for treatment that can also include telehealth and community outreach programs here in Ohio.
